The Details

In a Nutshell

An intense, layered, inky and powerful red from the harsh climate of Jumilla.

Tasting Notes

Dense, vibrant and youthful in appearance, with thoroughly integrated characters. The wine is beautifully perfumed, with violets, cherries, red berries and gentle vanilla oak notes. The palate has a fresh burst of blackcurrant followed by a delicious ripe blueberry character. Tannins are poised, building to the finish, where there are hints of liquorice. A bright and intense wine - an excellent example of the potential quality of petit verdot when managed correctly.

Production Notes

Fruit is from young vines, planted in 1996.

The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel and is then aged in American and French oak for 10 months before spending sometime in bottle.

Producer - Bodegas Juan Gil

The Gil family have been major producers in Jumilla since the early 20th century but took a major step forward when Miguel Gil, great-grandson of the company’s founder, built a new bodega in time for the 2003 vintage.

Press Quotes & Awards

Heady, dusty, interesting nose. Suggests that this variety can do well outside the Medoc! Oak is a little obvious but there is surely a bright future for Petit Verdot in Spain.
