The Details

In a Nutshell

Soft and persistent with hints of white flowers and hazelnuts. Easy-drinking and approachable.

Tasting Notes

An exuberant, confident and bright style - lively and very approchable with a citrus fruits - golden apple character which is at the same time both incisive yet quite gentle. A fantastically good value alternative to Champagne.

Production Notes

The alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tank at controlled temperature between 16 and 18 °C with selected yeast. Tirage is done in spring time of the following year, the wine spends 24 month ageing on the lees. At disgorgement 7 grams/litre of sugar is added.

Producer - Azienda Agricola Ferghettina

One of the emerging estates in Italy’s booming sparkling wine sector. Roberto Gatti spent 20 years as cellarmaster and viticulturalist at Bellavista, one of the early pioneers of the Franciacorta region, before creating Ferghettina in 1990. A new winery and cellars, started in 2002, were completed in 2005 and sit in a magnificent location overlooking the beautiful Lake Iseo. Roberto is assisted by his daughter Laura, also an oenologist, shortly to be joined by his son Matteo. The Gatti’s control production of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, using only half of the grapes available for their production of 300,000 bottles. Meticulous attention to detail, skillful blending and long bottle maturation give wines of great finesse and individuality. The ‘Italy’s answer to Champagne’ tag is unavoidable but these wines are much more than that.

Alcoholic fermentation was conducted in stainless steel tanks, with 24 months of “sur lie” maturation thereafter. Disgorged at 7g/l residual sugar. One of the least expensive wines in the tasting this may be, but one of the lowest quality it is not. Delicate aromas of pear, white flowers and lemon citrus are evident on the nose with a smooth and refined palate offering purity and a fair length... 85 points.

Editor's Column, www.independent-wine-review.com , 20th July 2013

Citrus notes with some creaminess. Light and elegant. Classy, dry and refined.

International Wine Challenge 2012

Ripe pear and white flower aromas with lemon citrus flavours, good length and a touch of richness. Maria Rodriguez noted 'huge minerality'. Robert Giorgione thought it was 'quite delicious but expensive.'
