The Details

In a Nutshell

A rather special and rare find - proof of the validity of SG as a fantastic wine.

Tasting Notes

The only Sauvignon Gris in our list, there is just something reassuringly recognisable in this essentially Polynesian style of Sauvignon Gris – somewhere between Chile and New Zealand. Often used in Chile, not as a poor mans SB but as a wine that has real purpose, it’s a really good wine in its own right. It’s a big, aromatic cousin of Sauvignon Blanc but here, as you are drawn into the bottle, it retains the texture and structure of Casablanca’s marginal valley. The nose is already slightly evolved and there’s real intensity and perfume. The fruit notes are lifted and tropical and marry beautifully with fresh aroma of waxy lemons. An abundance of gooseberry, mango and melon fruit show throughout the palate and the finish is elegant and long. This is a deliciously bright and full flavoured white – think of it as a muscular Sauv Blanc that always wants to make a statement. The label captures some of Chile’s oldest and least represented grape varieties. ‘El Viejo del Valle’ or ‘The Old Man of the Valley’ celebrates the 1950s Chilean street graffiti.

Production Notes

Sauvignon Gris tends to mature very early and has a high sugar level. The grapes are a beautiful dusky pink/apricot colour and they have thick skins. Sourced from a very small plot in the Casablanca Valley, these low yielding vines were first planted when cuttings were brought over to Chile by European settlers.

A single varietal Sauvignon Gris wine. The grapes were crushed and gently pressed to achieve fresh, clear, elegant juice. This was then fermented slowly at cool temperatures to retain the very distinctive regional and varietal characters. No oak was used on this wine.

Producer - Boutinot Chile

We have been working with the growers of Sierra Grande for many years, and Boutinot winemaker Eric Monnin has grown a close relationship with the aptly-named Hacienda Valle Frio, a beautiful 200 year old estate in the rocky, riverine Maule Valley. When Eric first visited the long-established family fruit grower he was hugely struck by the beautiful, 200 year old hill-top hacienda whose wooden columns and ancient palm trees have magically survived all the biggest earthquakes in recorded history. He was also struck by the strawberries grown there, and by sheer force of personality convinced them to grow some Pinot Noir! Since 2008, Eric has worked closely with winemaker Rodrigo on extracting the very best expression of their mountainous site apparent in the Sierra Grande Chardonnay and Cabernet, and of course the fabulous Pinot Noir that Eric tasted in those strawberries all those years ago!
