The Details

In a Nutshell

Complex and warming with spice, cocoa and coffee notes. This is a fantastic wine not to be missed.

Tasting Notes

Deep red in colour with hints of violet. The complex bouquet offers warm spices, cocoa, coffee, liquorice and ripe berry fruit. Soft and velvety on the palate, the full-bodied Canace has a fresh acidity from the Aglianico, balanced with elegant tannins and lingering spice.

Production Notes

The name “Canace” comes from “blending” the initial syllables of the towns where the wineries are located – Canosa, in the hills north of Bari in the DOC Castel del Monte area, at 480 metres above sea level, and Acerenza in Basilicata. Soils are calcareous and rocky, and vines are VSP and guyot trained, with a density of 3500 per hectare.

Grapes were left to partially dry on the vines. Upon arrival at the winery, the fruit underwent a maceration of 15 to 20 days and fermentation took place at a controlled temperature with selected yeasts. The wine was vinified in concrete tanks, where it was kept for about eight months, followed by 12 months in large French oak barrels.

Producer - Cantina Diomede

Cantina Diomede is based in northern Puglia, close to the town of Canosa and it controls 200 hectares of vineyards.

    (verified owner):

This is a mouth-filling, very dark red whose fruits do for wine something like a well-aged cheddar does for cheese! It is full, velvety and, for a 13.5% wine, surprisingly powerful, free of any acidity on the nose or palate, instead offering chunky dark-fruit flavours concentrated to perfection. If, like us, you enjoy other big Italian wines like Aglianico, or indeed Californian or Greek Cabernet Sauvignon, then you might love this. At £21 it is very good value. Incidentally, the bottle has no mention of Aglianico, and the maker’s Italian website confirms that this is 100% Nero (or Uva) di Troia. It’s distinctive, dark and delicious – almost as dark as Pheasant’s Tears, made in Georgia (Eastern Europe) from the Saperavi grape, another astonishingly rich and satisfying dark red wine.
