In a Nutshell
This Port Charlotte 10 year old has been conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay alone.
We are a young team with deep-rooted values, and an ambition to make the ultimate “Islay” Islay whisky. A whisky made by people not software; a whisky watched over every day of its maturing life by those who made it; a whisky born of a community with a vision and a mission to kick start a single malt whisky revolution, this Port Charlotte 10 year old is who we are. This is where we’re from.
Two miles south of Bruichladdich, hugging the shore of Loch Indaal, lies the village of Port Charlotte and ruins of Lochindaal Distillery, that ran spirit for 100 years between 1829 and 1929. The heavily peated Port Charlotte single malts are a tribute to the men who once worked this great, now silent, distillery. Trickle distilled in the still house at Bruichladdich, the spirit is then matured in the original old stone warehouses in Port Charlotte. Peated to a heavyweight 40ppm, Port Charlotte Scottish barley is matured in Amercian and European casks hand-picked by master distiller Jim McEwan. It showcases the supreme elegance of this unique and remarkable single malt - a union of the classic floral elegance of Bruichladdich and heavy peat.
Bruichladdich has always stood apart from other Islay whiskies, it does not have the heavy smoke and peat of the other distilleries on the Island. The gentle character of the spirit is attributed by some to the milder weather conditions, sheltered, as it is from the worst of Atlantic weather by the Rhinns mountain range.
