Heaven Hill Distilleries Inc was founded in Bardstown, Kentucky in 1934, not long after the abolition of Prohibition.
Named for William Heavenhill, the company was established by a group of investors including Joseph L Beam (brother of Jim) and the Shapira brothers: David, Ed, George, Mose and Gary. The Shapira family eventually bought out the rest of the investors and their descendents own the company outright, making Heaven Hill the only remaining family owned Bourbon distillery. The company created the Evan Williams brand in 1957, and added the original small batch bourbon Elijah Craig in 1986. The company also owns and makes a number of other famous brands including Rittenhouse. Another great tradition is that all of the Master Distillers at Heaven Hill since its founding have been members of the Beam family.
