Glenrothes Distillery

Glenrothes Distillery

Built in 1878, the Glenrothes distillery lies in the heart of Speyside beside the Burn of Rothes.

The first spirit flowed from the stills on 28th December 1879, the buildings have been extended and production increased considerably over the years, much of this output has been used in blended scotch whiskies such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse. In a somewhat complicated arrangement The Glenrothes Distillery is owned by Edrington, but the The Glenrothes Single Malt is owned by Berry Bros & Rudd. Since 1993 Berry Brothers has marketed The Glenrothes single malt as a vintage whisky, following the same principle as wines these are the product of one year”s output, each vintage therefore has a different character – something almost all other distilleries try to avoid by blending from several years to maintain a consistent style.
